Mercy Chelangat
IEEE Smart Village Ambassador East Africa

Mercy Chelangat is the Ambassador of IEEE Smart Village (ISV) Africa Fund Development Working Group and the PES R8 Women in Power Representative Eastern Africa Region. She leads in the development, integration, and execution of ISV fundraising strategies as it relates to cultivation and solicitation of major gifts from corporate and private/family foundations, and trusts.As the Smart Village ambassador, Mercy has conducted awareness workshops on sustainable community development through the three ISV pillars; Energy, Education, and Entrepreneurship.
Mercy is an electrical engineer, with a focus on renewable energy technologies and is an avid researcher in emerging trends such as electric vehicles and e-Mobility. Mercy is currently overseeing the IEEE Smart Village initiative in partnership with the Maa Trust involving the construction of a solar-powered global classroom, the Maa Empowerment Hub and new social enterprises underway in partnership with IEEE, including Maa e-Safari, which will involve the use of electric tuk-tuks and trucks in the transportation of passengers and goods in rural Maasai Mara. Mercy believes the future is electric. As a young passionate engineer, Mercy has been an awardee of the prestigious IEEE R8 Women in Engineering Clementina Saduwa award 2019. She has overseen the piloting of the Networking without Borders PES Renewable Energy for Kids Program and Women in Engineering Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist program, in Kenya, intending to boost one on one interaction between students and professionals in engineering.
Mercy has been an associate with the following organizations: Tunisian Smart Cities Association, African Women Energy Entrepreneurs Framework (AWEEF), the Micro-Grid Academy, Industrial Promotion Services (IPS, K) under the Aga Khan Foundation for Economic Development (AKFED), Inuka Corporate Leadership Training Program, The Peace Ambassadors Integration Organization (PAMBIO) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. IEEE. Mercy is a Social Impact Liaison on the 2020 IEEE Entrepreneurship Steering Committee.
